A Message From CIRED Executive Director Van Crowder

It is with great pleasure that I announce that the Office of International Research, Education and Development (OIRED) has become the Center for International Research, Education and Development (CIRED). We are planning an official CIRED launch in early February, so stay tuned and come help us celebrate!

Making A Positive Difference for Senegalese Youth

CIRED has received a $4 million award from the U.S. Agency for International Development to continue transforming Senegal’s agricultural sector through youth empowerment, education, and training. The five-year Feed the Future Senegal Youth in Agriculture (YIA) project will increase youth engagement in Senegal’s economic growth and carry on the work of the CIRED-led Education and Research in Agriculture (ERA) project in Senegal by expanding 4-H clubs across the country and institutionalizing positive youth development nationally.

Partner Profile

The International Center for Agribusiness Research and Education (ICARE)

Armenia has a food and wine heritage most countries can only envy. With fertile valleys perfect for vineyards, the country is home to the oldest wine production caves ever uncovered by archeologists. UNESCO recognizes lavash, the country’s beloved stone oven-baked bread, as a cultural treasure.

Project Highlight

Leading the Effort to Protect Africa's Crops

As invasive and indigenous insect pests continue to wreak havoc on crops across Africa, CIRED’s Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Innovation Lab is intensifying its work beyond borders and other barriers.

New Opportunities

CIRED is pursuing new projects and opportunities around the world

CIRED has been active in the past few months in the search for new partners, projects, and opportunities. CIRED is currently pursuing a Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) funding opportunity in Morocco that involves capacity development for the hospitality and tourism sector.  In doing this, CIRED is working with Virginia Tech’s Hospitality and Tourism Management (HTM) Department, which is ranked #2 and #6 for HTM in the U.S. and the world respectively.
